As turnkey renewable energy provider SUNOTEC started this summer with the construction of the Aizpute project in Latvia. The project includes a solar power plant with a capacity of 400 MWp and a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 600 MWh. It’s one of the largest solar parks in the Baltic region, close to the Baltic Sea. And the UFOs of Kooi are there to assure a safe and smooth running of the project.
Let’s meet Georgi Ivanov. He is responsible for health, safety and communication of the SUNOTEC projects in four countries like Poland and the Baltics. Luckily he speaks five language which comes in handy when communicating with all the international partners. Like Kooi Camera Surveillance. “Kooi crossed my path via a project manager who advised me to get in touch. So I met International Project manager Tom Frölich. The first two cameras we ordered he brought himself and gave all the instructions how to install the UFO-system and make connection with the Kooi Alarm Center,” Georgi says. “Top service!”
Since then the two have close contact. “I have been working in many places and with many persons but Tom is one of the best contacts I ever had. He is very friendly and fair. We also met in a more informal setting where we talked about the Netherlands,” Georgi smiles. “Tom is the one who is on top!”
Now, on the vast area where the smell of the sea hangs out, several UFO Mediums and UFO Primes secure the project. Also the Powerboxes providing consistent, environmentally friendly power for the surveillance systems which is ideal for this location without stable electricity. There is also plenty of valuable stuff to guard. Georgi: “We have dozens of construction items, metal, copper cables and solar models which are very expensive.”
For Georgi also the communication with the centralists of the 24/7 Kooi Alarm Center is essential. “We get detailed reports when something has happened on the site,” he states. “And when we have to move the camera because the activities are moving over the large area we call the KAC and everything is taken care of right away.”
And so the Units For Observation (UFO) are scattered across the project area. A bit like modern scarecrows. With the UFO Mediums equipped with a 360° PTZ camera and two motion sensors at the top of the mast and the Prime to cover the largest part of the complex construction site. Both systems have sirens and voice messages that can be activated directly from the Kooi Alarm Center. “They are very useful for the project,” Georgi states. “We sure need them and we haven’t had any problems so far. Well, there once was a suspicious car coming at night but they saw the cameras and they turned right around. So the systems do have a preventive effect as well.”
The Aizpute construction site covers quite a few square kilometers in the Cīrava-region. Reason enough for Georgi to link the UFOs to two manguards. They enter the site every evening around six p.m. and leave in the morning when the first workers arrive. “The guards are doing rounds on the premises which is really huge. The UFOs are the extra eyes who can spot suspicious activities. Then the Alarm Center can dispatch the guards to the exact location,” says Georgi. “Its pure teamwork between them and the cameras.”
For now the Aizpute project runs right on schedule. Grid connection is expected by March 2027. And Kooi Camera Surveillance will walk with Georgi on the journey. “We are very satisfied with Kooi because of the good communication with project manager Tom and the Kooi Alarm Center. You have fast, direct contact when you need it without any waiting time. That’s what counts. We will sure recommend Kooi to our partners. Of course!”
